Jose Rizal, The face of the Philippines

Jose Rizal is considered the face of the Philippines because his life and writings brought about the national identity of the Filipino people. Jose Rizal’s greatest contribution to the Philippine society was not done through armed struggle but through his written words and his peaceful fight against the abuse of the Spanish government.

During that time when Filipinos were perceived as inferior beings, Jose Rizal was able to show that through education and moral strength, oppression and division can be overcome.

Rizal was able to address the injustices of Spanish colonization through his writings under the titles "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo." Rizal was able to open the eyes of the Filipino people to the fact of colonial injustices. His message was more on reform, truth, and dignity than on violence; hence, his writings remain influential until today.

Rizal’s advocacy for education was a significant contribution to Philippine society as a whole. Rizal believed that the key to freedom and progress was through education, as he said that an enlightened people could not be enslaved.

Another significant impact Rizal had on Philippine society is in relation to education. Rizal saw education as the major stimulator in achieving freedom and progress. Thus, Rizal believed that if the Filipinos can become more enlightened and knowledgeable, no matter how much the Spanish government enslaved them, the Philippines can never truly be enslaved because the Filipinos can never be slaves.

The influence of Rizal even extended after his death. Rizal’s execution in 1896 served to embolden Filipinos to continue fighting for independence and became a symbol of sacrifice for their country. Rizal is still a national hero and remains so because the principles he fights for, such as patriotism, peace, and love for country, are still upheld in Philippine society.
