Pagabelan ni Tinay and Vigan Heritage Jar Making: Preserving Ilocano Traditions

Caoayan is a town that is near to the Heritage City of Vigan. It is referred to as the Birthplace of Abel, the
Ilocanos' traditional handwoven material. One such popular weaving shop here is Pagabelan ni Tinay, where local weavers continues the tradition of making Abel on wooden looms and colorful threads.

When I went to visit Pagabelan ni Tinay, I was able to witness how the weavers patiently worked on their designs. Their hands moved slowly, making patterns that shows both skill and imagination. It takes hours or days to complete one piece of fabric. They produce blankets, scarves, bags, and other items that capture the culture and diligence of Caoayan people.

Although Abel weaving began in Caoayan, it has also become part of Vigan's heritage. There are still some of the weaving shops in Vigan that produce Abel to promote Ilocano craftsmanship to foreigners. It proves how Caoayan and Vigan work together in continuing this lovely tradition.

Besides weaving, Vigan is also known for burnay jar production. Burnay jars are produced from clay and hand-shaped by using the potter's wheel. Burnay jars were used to store water, rice wine, or vinegar. Nowadays, they are not only used as house decorations and souvenirs. Observing potters shape and bake the jars is a very amazing experience that showst their passion and skill.

Both Abel weaving in Caoayan and jar making in Vigan are symbols of Ilocano pride and creativity. These crafts helps local families and keep our culture alive. When tourists come and buy local products, they are also helping the community and saving our heritage.

At Pagabelan ni Tinay and having to see the burnay jars of Vigan, I gained a deeper appreciation for our culture. I know that our ways are worth being proud of because they are stories of our past, of our people, and of the love we have for our province.
